Creating the Innovative Culture
Almost every R&D organization has most or all of the scientific expertise it needs to be innovative. Adding more scientific knowledge or ability is rarely the biggest opportunity. The opportunity more often lies with a handful of important behavioral elements. Read more
The Development of the Scientist Leader
I’ve developed a unique approach that is a blend of three roles: Developmental Coach / Thinking Partner / Advisor.
This approach creates real-time improvement and long term development. The result? Individual leaders learn to think in new ways, to engage in challenging situations with a fresh perspective, to manage themselves more effectively, and to focus their energies on what is critically important. About Matt’s Focus on Science-based Organizations

I have a longstanding commitment to science organizations, and the unique challenges faced by their leaders. This is driven by a fascination with science, an enjoyment of scientists, and a preference for science to play a large role as society faces complex challenges.
Innovation, creativity, and collaboration are the lifeblood of scientific organizations. We can all tell when this is going well, or not. Still, the formula and “magic sauce” can seem so elusive.
This leads to a dedication to exploring these questions:
- How do scientific organizations create the conditions, encourage the behaviors, and provide the skills that lead to a full pipeline of ideas and products?
- How do they keep the energy high, the focus clear, and the cooperation humming?
My work is informed by three decades of experiences as a coach, thinking partner, business owner, and change consultant. My clients have included bio/pharm, chemical, health care, and environmental health, and have ranged from Fortune 50 to small business to nonprofits. I use a variety of approaches and methods.
I also work with technology startup companies, and have lessons learned from both success and failure. This learning is useful with innovation initiatives in mature organizations, as there are similar challenges and dynamics.
My education includes an undergraduate degree in Management, and postgraduate programs in organizational theory and development at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and NTL Institute. I serve as faculty for the Organizational Consulting and Change Leadership Program at Georgetown University, as time allows.
See What They’re Saying
Matt was the only executive coach I used that I was pleased with. He was very effective and a trusted thinking partner for me and several of my staff, during a time of intense financial difficulty and tremendous stress. He was a quick study regarding the hospital, and added value in multiple ways.
Elaine Ullian
CEO, Boston Medical CenterWe’ve had a lot of consultants in over the years and you are the only one who I experienced as highly skilled, understanding of our challenges, and able to connect with us really well.
Chief Operating Officer
We were able to gain a much better understanding of some problems that had been affecting us for a long time. More importantly, we were able to take concrete steps to address these issues, and realize significant improvement in our overall situation. Our expectations were definitely met, and in many ways exceeded. Matt always maintains a clear focus and is very conscious of the value of everyone’s time.
Roger Carolin
CEO, CFM TechnologiesThe most valuable parts: better understanding our intent to develop a greater culture of innovation, gaining greater self-awareness of how I can influence the culture in conversations and group, and the network of leaders I am now connected with.
Group Leader
You should be very proud of how you came into the organization and won the trust of so many very quickly.
