About Matt’s Focus on Mission Driven Organizations

I’m determined that my work help make the world a better place. This has led to a focus on mission-driven organizations and the people who lead them: those driving social change, providing social services, and innovating with a social purpose.
I’ve got three decades of this under my belt now, and am effective in any mission driven sector. I’ve got considerable experience in affordable housing, environmental health, health care delivery, and animal welfare and protection.
I’m capable in working with community members, clients, front line staff, senior management teams, funders, and Board members, and most effective when working with several simultaneously. This comes from a unique and diverse set of career experiences as a Board member, volunteer, employee, manager, and consultant. For example, in the health care delivery sector, my experiences ranges from helping to build a community based medical clinic for migrant farmworkers, to being the strategic thinking partner and coach for the CEO of a major urban hospital.
I also work with start-up organizations, providing lessons learned from both success and failure. This learning is directly applicable to the social sector, with many similar challenges and dynamics with their innovation efforts.
All of this comes together in a pragmatic, informed, creative approach to supporting mission-driven organizations and their leaders. The focus is on the development of individual leaders through coaching, and the advancement of a significant change or ambitious new vision through consulting. My orientation is to appreciate strengths, and to include the “whole system” when possible. I have a solid comprehension of the functional tasks of mission-driven organizations – e.g. fundraising, marketing/branding, service delivery, volunteer management – enabling a wholistic understanding of influences and impacts.
My education includes an undergraduate degree in Management, and postgraduate programs in organizational theory and development at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and NTL Institute. I’ve served as faculty for the Organizational Consulting and Change Leadership Program at Georgetown University, as time allows.

Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Greater CharlottesvilleMatt’s support and insight has led to great improvement and a significant increase in funding. He’s (Matt has) helped me to think about the organization’s opportunities and strategies, and my leadership of it, in critical and very different ways. I can’t imagine where we’d be without him.”

Founder, Chief Scientist, and CEO, Environmental Health SciencesI find myself centered and clear, solid and sure about my judgment, leadership style, and intuition, and equally clear about my deficits. I find myself quieter, more strategic and less reactive. And perhaps most importantly, I find myself disengaged from the drama – not ignoring it but not at the center of it, not hijacked by it. Thank you for your guidance, challenge, wisdom, and support. I am most grateful!
